So in a roundabout way, I did become a fireman, because at a small, weekly newspaper, it turns out the editor is the one who spends most of the time putting out fires.
I started freelacing as a side hustle, and when our company was bought out, I decided 20 years was enough and struck out on my own as a full-time freelancer.
And here we are, still in that same one-stoplight town.
